Penelope Ridings is an Honorary Professor of Law at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and Member-Elect of the International Law Commission. She practises in the field of public international law, including international trade and investment law, oceans and environmental law, and international dispute settlement.

Penelope was formerly New Zealand’s Chief International Legal Adviser as well as its International Trade Law Adviser. She has negotiated free trade agreements, represented New Zealand as Counsel in WTO cases, and advises on all aspects of international trade law.

After 20 years, negotiations on harmful fisheries subsidies are reaching their final stage. If success is achieved, this will be due in part to aligning the outcome of the WTO negotiations with existing international legal frameworks and sustainable fisheries management, and recognition of the special circumstances of subsistence, artisanal and small-scale fisheries.
